The American pay television network Home Box Office (HBO) is a division of the parent company Home Box Office, Inc. owned by WarnerMedia Entertainment. The majority of the network’s programming is made up of theatrically released films and original television series, coupled with made-for-cable films, documentaries, and sporadic comedy and music-related specials.
The first, oldest, and longest continuously running subscription television service (basic or a la carte premium) in the United States, HBO has its headquarters at the Home Box Office, Inc. facilities inside WarnerMedia’s corporate headquarters at 30 Hudson Yards in Manhattan’s West Side neighborhood, having been in operation since November 8, 1972. (initially as a regional service until it began transmitting nationwide via satellite in September 1975). With an operational income of around $2 billion annually, the HBO business unit as a whole is one of WarnerMedia’s most lucrative assets (behind Warner Bros. Entertainment); as of 2018, HBO had 140 million customers worldwide .[2]
The network runs seven 24-hour linear multiplex channels in addition to video on demand and streaming services, such as HBO Go (a TV Everywhere service for subscribers to HBO’s linear television that launched in February 2010 and will be discontinued on July 31, 2020) and HBO Now (which launched in April 2015 and had over 5 million subscribers in the United States as of February 2018[3]). Its content is also the focus of HBO Max, a separately run, expanded streaming service.
The HBO linear channels are not available on any streaming service, but they are still accessible to current pay TV subscribers of physical and virtual providers as well as to users of Apple, Amazon, and Roku thanks to streaming agreements with those businesses.
